Location

Thakadu River Camp is in Madikwe Game Reserve. Amongst many other wildlife species, this malaria free Reserve is home to Wild Dog, Cheetah and the Big 5 animals.

Thakadu River Camp is a luxury game lodge overlooking the Marico River, in Madikwe.

It is situated in North West Province and approximately three and a half hours drive from Johannesburg, or about an hour's flight.

About Thakadu River Camp

Thakadu River Camp is set within the riverine canopy along the banks of the Marico River and comprises 8 tented suites, each with their own viewing deck overlooking the Marico River. The tents are large and spacious and are wonderfully decorated and appointed. Each tent has a sliding door that opens onto a private deck overlooking the river.

The main camp is located between the Marico and a small tributary of the Marico. The main area comprises an open plan lounge, dining and reception area, with the pool and bar area offering views of the gully and river to the north. A traditional 'lapa' falls within a glade of natural riverine forest.

The décor of the camp has a strong Afro-Asian Safari ambience to it, with use of natural stone, fibres, cloth and carpets as well as metal and wood featuring prominently throughout the camp.

The influence of the river is very apparent, with the trees, birds and water providing a peaceful and tranquil mood within the camp.

Little Thakadu comprises of 4 tents ideally used for exclusive use with its own private vehicle and plunge pool.

Activities

There are morning and afternoon / evening game-drives in open game-viewing vehicles, accompanied by with informed and professional game rangers.

Regrettably, due to safety concerns, children under 6 years of age are unable to participate in game-drives. Kiddies drives available for children under 6 years of age.

Wildlife, Birdlife & Nature

Madikwe is home to a tremendous diversity of fauna and flora, including the black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. Thakadu River Camp offers superb walking and open vehicle safari drives. Guests are accompanied by well-trained and informative rangers who are able to interpret the many encounters whilst on safari.

Directions

Situated in the Madikwe Game Reserve, access to the lodge is either by road or by air. It is about 4 hours' drive from Johannesburg via the N4.
